If you have an AdultFriendFinder account you should change your password immediately. Because Friend Finder Network, the parent company of AFF, has been hacked. In total, 412 million accounts have been leaked online, with AdultFriendFinder taking by far the biggest hit.
In other words you’re unlikely to go there looking for someone to grow old with. AFF calls itself “the world’s largest sex and swinger community”.
According to LeakedSource [Broken URL Removed], unknown hackers have gained access to 412 million accounts belonging to people using Friend Finder Networks. 339 million of these were sourced from AdultFriendFinder, 62 million from Cams, and 7 million from Penthouse. These aren’t all active accounts either, with 15 million “deleted” accounts also being exposed.
Usernames, passwords, IP addresses, VIP statuses, and purchase histories have all been exposed. Which isn’t surprising when the passwords were stored either in plain text or secured with the outdated and insecure SHA-1 hash. AdultFriendFinder is currently investigating the data breach, and claims to have fixed the vulnerability that let the hackers in.
The Sliding Scale of Embarrassing Leaks
AdultFriendFinder sprang a small leak last year when 3.9 million users had their details plastered all over the internet. This one is clearly much larger, but those affected by the previous one had their sexual preferences exposed for all to see. Which must be excruciating.
Unlike Ashley Madison, which also got hacked last year, AFF doesn’t target people in existing relationships. So unless people in relationships are using AFF behind their partners’ backs, this limits the potential for extortion.
Users caught up in this leak should change their passwords on any site which shares the login credentials they used for AdultFriendFinder. AFF, meanwhile, needs to finish its investigation into the incident as quickly as possible, and then put stronger safeguards in place to prevent further intrusions.
Have you been affected by this AdultFriendFinder leak? What steps are you taking to protect yourself from hackers? Have you been affected by any of the other high-profile hacks? Are things only going to get worse from here? Please let us know in the comments below!
